They work very well because they communicate an upfront expectation of how long the article may be and what kind of value you may expect. List posts are incredibly useful because they offer multiple solutions for a single topic or problem. They provide value and readability over that of straight text or a single narrative.
I don’t know about you, but when I see a list post, I skim the first paragraph and maybe the first sentence of the second and immediately jump to the very next header or jump straight to number 1. I will then skim a sentence or two (or more if it grabs my attention well) then I’ll skip to the next and so on, but one thing’s for sure: I will always skim through to each point and read each heading. I can’t help myself. But, I can’t leave the list unfinished. I may be the exception, but I’m a bit meticulous. I can’t go onto something else without finishing the list first like it’s a little game. 2. How-To Post
Provide a step-by-step guided tutorial of how to complete a certain task that may be difficult for a number of people. Also, be sure to add your own unique perspective and make it fun. Learning something new should be an enjoyable process for everyone. Make it as simple as possible and use fun and helpful imagery. Also be clear and concise in your communication so as not to lose any readers to confusion.
3. Case Study
Case studies deliver concrete, real world examples for a particular topic. They provide more specific value than theoretical examples. The incredible benefit of presenting your case study is that your reader doesn’t have to do any of the work because you did it all for them! This type of post provides real value to all audiences.
4. Problem/Solution Post
This one should be familiar. In its simplest form: define a unique problem and provide the solution. You’ll first need to determine what your audience is struggling with. You can do this in a number of ways.
You can first determine a particular problem by analyzing your own personal struggles that are related to your industry. You can then recall your process for finding a solution and present it. Or, if you are still struggling with the problem, you can research the topic, test it out, and provide your solutions all in one post!
You can also simply ask your audience what they’re struggling with at the moment and find solutions for them. You can survey your audience on social channels or ask them at the end of a blog post and read through the replies. You can check out forums related to your industry and understand what chief complaints may be circulating and match a solution to these. This will also help you stand out above the rest as being a real authority on a given topic or industry.
An example that comes to mind is Tim Ferris’s book, The 4-Hour Chef. He described in an interview that he found topics and recipes to be sure to include in his book based on the 1-3 star yelp reviews for leading cookbooks out there. He analyzed why each book received a poor review and what their chief complaint was. He then gathered the data to present his unique solution in order to fill that void. For example, he found that many cookbooks didn’t focus on a specific type of BBQ recipe. He then provided recipes surrounding this topic and filled the void in the market. Genius!
5. Research Post
Presenting your findings from first-hand research regarding a specific topic is an incredible way to differentiate yourself from others. You provide your unique perspective and deliver some highly valuable information in the process. In addition, you can take the research of others and compile it into your own format that your specific readers will love! Be sure to add your own spin on the findings and try putting it into different formats such as a video or an infographic if it’s not already.
6. FAQ Post
As you start to receive questions from your audience, you should be compiling them into a master list. You can begin to group certain question and record your responses for future use.
