Here is a quick and digestible tutorial that teaches you the ins and outs of WordPress SEO. We’ll answer how it works and the absolute best ways to implement the most valuable strategies so that you can get your website optimized for ranking higher in search engines!

If you’ve never heard of SEO before don’t worry, a lot of people don’t understand it fully, but this video will clearly guide you through the process.

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization is a methodology of strategies and techniques used to increase the amount of visitors to a website by getting a high ranking in search results. Getting your website on the first page of a search engine is the ultimate goal. Being on the first page means viewers are more likely to see and click on your website if it’s ranked high and placed above all the other results.

To hear more of our best SEO strategies, check out our article here: The Future of SEO: The Three Cs and How To Implement Them Today.

So how does Google rank pages?

Google promotes authority pages to the top of its rankings. It’s your job to ensure your page is an authority page by creating content that people love and come back to over and over again. Create content that is engaging, interesting, and unique and it will be shared all over the internet through social media. By doing this, over a period of time, Google may pick up on these authority signals and support your page as a more relevant search result.

Getting your content talked about and back linked to is important, but don’t confuse quantity with quality. It is vital to create quality content that your visitors will love. Think about your target market and create content that matches their needs and desires. This strong quality creates sustainable Google rankings.

However, creating quality content isn’t the only way to give your website a much better rank. To increase your rankings even more, you can also use a nifty plugin called WordPress SEO by Yoast!

Yoast SEO Plugin

Websites Made Easy WordPress SEO by Yoast

Yoast’s SEO plugin, simply put, helps you write better content. It gives you a snippet preview of what your post will look like in search results. This is important because you are able to see what will be displayed whens someone is searching for your topic. You’ll be able to see whether your title is too long or too short, if your meta description makes sense in the context of a search result, and which exact keywords you’re really targeting all in one place.

Using this plugin will help you not only increase your search relevancy, but it will increase the click through rate (CTR) for organic search results. More people will be more likely to click on your page because you’re now really providing a more targeted and relevant answer to someone’s search query.

How to Install Yoast WordPress SEO

So, in order to install Yoast WordPress SEO follow these 3 simple steps:

  1. Go to WordPress Plugins and Add New.
  2. Then search for WordPress SEO by Yoast.
  3. Click on Download/Install, then Activate, and your done! (You’ll now be able to see the plugin in your dashboard).

With the plugin you’ve got the page analysis functionality which checks simple things you’re bound to forget. For example, it will determine whether your images in your post have an alt tag containing your focus keyword for that post. It also lets you set templates for titles and meta descriptions for all types of pages. This will help you designate your specific targeted keywords. It makes everything simplified. You can now come up with a template and no longer have to think about it! With all of these benefits among many more found in this plugin, your website will have a great start to high rankings within search engines.

Both tools are useful if used properly. Adwords is a great tool with branding and new products. SEO is more like a long term strategy. To test conversions, adwords is very useful and comes in handy while seo targets are not yet reached. It is costly but you get what you pay for. I agree too that seo – if it works could be the winner in the long run.

I particularly like that you can choose to no follow or no-index a page very easily, and of course being able to adjust the meta content is imperative to good SEO.

Yoast is AWESOME! We use it virtually all our WordPress sites, from an SEO stand point however, the suggestions and color of the lights that it gives aren’t always the most effective. We use the plugin for all it’s capabilities, but use our own judgement and experience on the “amount” of SEO we put into sites.

Great Read. Thanks.

A great piece James. We alternate between Yoast and AllinOne SEO plugins. Each has it’s pros and cons. We find Yoast having a lot of features but AllinOne is cleaner. So depending on the project on hand, we’ll select the best for it’s job.

Hiring a Search Engine Optimization Agency can make or break your company. A good SEO Expert can lead you to be successful , but a bad one can paralyze any existing search traffic you get. It is important to choose carefully, as new Digital Marketing Agencies are popping out every day and you can be overwhelmed, tempting you to simply hire the first company you contact or the one that sends in a cheap proposal. But if you do so you may not hire the right firm to meet the needs of your business. These tips will help you hire the Best SEO Agency

And do you have any suggestions as to the best settings?

Thanks.

Yoast SEO is a good easy to use plugin. I mainly use it for adding Meta Data to all my pages and posts, and also to change the permalinks on my WordPress site.
You can also use it to no-index and no-follow, but that is a whole other topic in itself.
